Alpine and Mercedes: A strategic partnership starting in 2026 in Formula 1.
Alpine will embark on a pivotal transformation in Formula 1 starting with the 2026 season. The French team will rely on engines and transmissions supplied by Mercedes, following Renault’s decision to step back from its role as an engine manufacturer in the sport’s top category. This partnership represents a major step for Alpine, which aims to establish itself among the leading teams.
A new era with Mercedes.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, comes as new technical regulations for power units are set to take effect in 2026. These rules, aimed at making engines more efficient and sustainable, will be in force until 2030, during which Mercedes will serve as Alpine’s official supplier.
According to a statement from the team, the goal remains clear: “To continue our progress in 2024 and 2025 and prepare for a leap forward with Mercedes’ support from 2026.”
Viry-Châtillon becomes a hub of innovation.
At the same time, Alpine will transform its historic factory in Viry-Châtillon into a cutting-edge technological center named Hypertech Alpine. Scheduled for the end of 2024, this hub will focus on developing innovative technologies, ranging from electric batteries and motors to the next generation of Alpine performance vehicles.
In addition to Formula 1, Hypertech Alpine will play a key role in the brand’s endurance and rally programs, solidifying its expertise in high-performance vehicles.
Renault’s legacy: A legendary engine supplier.
Renault, Alpine’s parent company, leaves behind a prestigious legacy in F1. The manufacturer powered several legendary teams, most notably Red Bull, with whom it achieved four consecutive world championships thanks to Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013. Renault also played a central role in Fernando Alonso’s success in 2005 and 2006, when the Spaniard won two driver championships with the French team.
However, in recent years, Alpine has faced challenges in performance and reliability. Despite high ambitions, the team has struggled to compete with the top teams on the grid.
One last lap with Renault in 2025.
Before bidding farewell to Renault, Alpine will continue to be powered by the French manufacturer’s engines in 2025. In terms of drivers, changes are also on the horizon: Australian Jack Doohan will replace Esteban Ocon alongside Pierre Gasly to form a promising duo.
Looking ahead: Alpine aims for the top.
With Mercedes’ technological support and the launch of Hypertech Alpine, the team is poised to take a significant leap forward. This strategic partnership could redefine the hierarchy in Formula 1, offering Alpine a chance to return to the forefront and rekindle its glorious past.
